Kedarnath and the Panch Kedar
The story of Kedarnath is tied to the ancient epic, the Mahabharata. After the Kurukshetra war, the Pandavas went to the Himalayas to seek forgiveness for their sins from Lord Shiva.
However, Shiva was displeased with them and transformed himself into Nandi, a bull, to flee. Bhim, one of the Pandava brothers, eventually found the bull and tried to catch it. In a twist of events, Nandi vanished into the ground, and different parts of Shiva’s body reappeared at five different locations, giving rise to the Panch Kedars (the five Kedars).
The Panch Kedar Temples
Each of the five temples is associated with a specific part of Lord Shiva’s body:
- Kedarnath: The hump
- Tungnath: The arms
- Rudranath: The face
- Madhyamaheshwar: The navel
- Kalpeshwar: The hair
